This collection consists of a reminiscence (1920) written by Joseph King, rancher from Lewistown area. Topics include his father's immigration from Switzerland in 1869, coming to Montana in early 1870s to prospect; his own arrival in Montana with his mom and siblings in 1878 by boat up the Missouri to Fort Benton; their travel to Helena; reunion with father; settling in Diamond City; sluicing work on French Bar; moving to Helena on his own; boarding at International Annex; father entering cattle business; homestead claim in Little Rock Creek outside of Lewistown. Joseph King III was born in Banken, Switzerland, in 1860. His father Joseph King II immigrated from Switzerland in 1869 and travelled to Montana Territory to try his hand at prospecting. He lived and worked in Helena and Marysville for several years before he was able to pay his families passage to Montana. In 1877 Joseph King III, his mother, and siblings immigrated to the United States, travelling by steamboat up the Missouri River and arriving in Fort Benton, Montana Territory the following y...
